ACT Assessment for Therapists
How confident are you in your ACT skills?
Knowing about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is one thing. Using ACT skilfully, flexibly and confidently in a therapy session can be quite another.
The ACT Assessment for Therapists is a free online assessment designed to help therapists and other psychological practitioners reflect on their current ACT skills, identify areas of strength and discover where further development could make the biggest difference to their clinical practice.
Whether you have recently completed your first ACT training or have been using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for some time, the assessment can help you take stock of where you are now and decide what to focus on next.
What does the ACT assessment measure?
Effective ACT practice involves much more than remembering the six processes of the psychological flexibility model or knowing a collection of metaphors and exercises.
Therapists also need to recognise what is happening in the room, identify patterns that may be keeping a client stuck and make flexible decisions about what to target and how to respond.
This Acceptance and Commitment Therapy assessment explores some of the skills involved in putting ACT into practice.
Rather than treating ACT competency as a simple pass-or-fail test, the assessment is designed as a reflective tool. It can help you consider how confidently you are applying ACT principles and where deliberate practice, supervision or further training might be useful.
Who is the ACT competency test for?
The assessment has been created for counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and other mental health professionals who use, or are learning to use, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
It may be particularly useful if you:
- understand the basic ACT model but sometimes struggle to translate theory into practice;
- find yourself unsure what to focus on when a client presents with several interconnected difficulties;
- want to become less reliant on techniques, exercises or individual ACT processes;
- would like greater confidence making moment-to-moment therapeutic decisions; or
- want a clearer idea of which ACT skills to develop next.
Why assess your ACT skills?
Learning ACT is an ongoing process.
As therapists gain experience, the challenge often shifts from “What is ACT?” towards questions such as “What should I pay attention to here?”, “What is keeping this client stuck?” and “What should I do next?”
An ACT skills assessment can provide a useful starting point for answering those questions.
Your results can help you identify areas for development and give you a clearer focus for future learning, reflective practice, supervision and deliberate practice.
The aim isn’t to give you another label or tell you whether you are a “good” ACT therapist. It is to help you become more aware of your current skills so that you can make informed choices about how you develop them.
